Recalled that coronavirus is confirmed to have infected more than 1.5 million people in the US, with over 90,000 infected persons killed. The Centers for Disease Control (CDC), has said there are no approved drugs or therapeutics to prevent or treat Covid-19.
The US President, Donald Trump has said ‘even though health officials have warned it may be unsafe, he is currently taking hydroxychloroquine to prevent Covid-19.
The president caught reporters unawares when he revealed that he has been taking the drug for a week and half. He also revealed he has been taking a daily zinc supplement and received a single dose of azithromycin, an antibiotic meant to prevent infection.
He revealed this to reporters while speaking at the White House, that he started taking the malaria and lupus medication recently.
“I’m taking it for about a week and a half now and I’m still here, I’m still here,” he said.
Although clinical trials are ongoing to check the effectiveness of hydroxychloroquine, many believe that there is no evidence hydroxychloroquine can fight coronavirus.
Some White House members have recently tested positive for the virus, but the president said he had zero symptoms.
Cofirming this, Dr Sean Conley, a physician to the president, issued a statement through the White House on Monday that Mr Trump was in very good health and symptom-free. The president also revealed that he is being tested frequently.
He also told reporters; “You’d be surprised at how many people are taking it, especially the frontline workers before you catch it, the frontline workers, many, many are taking it. I happen to be taking it.”
Trump said his evidence that the drug works is because he lot of positive calls about its effectiveness.
“I’ve heard a lot of good stories about hydroxychloroquine and if it’s not good, I’ll tell you right, I’m not going to get hurt by it.”
The US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) last month had issued an advisory statement that hydroxychloroquine has “not been shown to be safe and effective”. It cited reports that the drug can cause serious heart rhythm problems in Covid-19 patients and warned against using the medication outside hospitals.
